Report: Seahawks, Russell Wilson still face 'sizable gap' in contract negotiations

Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks are closing in on their negotiation deadline and a long-term contract agreement still doesn't appear to be taking shape.

A sizable gap remains in the on-going talks and significant concessions would have to be made by at least one of the two sides for a deal to be reached before camp officially gets underway Friday morning, according to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports.

Deadlines often result in deals being agreed upon at the last minute, but with Wilson thought to be pursuing a record-setting contract, that may not be the likely result this time around.

Garafolo reports the Seahawks have been offering a deal that would make Wilson one of the NFL's three highest-paid quarterbacks, exceeding that of the five-year, $103.8-million contract the Carolina Panthers handed Cam Newton earlier this offseason.

While the Seahawks and Wilson would still have a number of opportunities to reach a deal beyond Friday, and the franchise tag could be used to keep him off the free-agent market for both the 2016 and 2017 campaigns ahead, settling his long-term future at this stage has long been considered the most sensible solution.

If the two sides remain intent on not addressing the contract situation beyond the first day of camp and substantial progress isn't made over night, the superstar quarterback would be set to play out the fourth and final year of his rookie deal.
