St. Louis Rams rookie running back Todd Gurley is expected to open training camp on the non-football injury list while he continues to recover from a torn ACL, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Gurley told NFL Media's Tiffany Blackmon in June that he was aiming to return for training camp. He can be taken off the NFI list at any time, though, so it's possible he could participate in camp at some point.

Rapoport previously reported that the timeline for Gurley was to be ready for the second week of training camp.

The Rams already had a solid running back in Tre Mason when they drafted Gurley with the No. 10 overall pick, but his addition should help elevate an offense that ranked 28th in the NFL last season.

Rams rookies report to camp July 27.
