Report: Marcus Mariota's rookie deal delayed by offset language

Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota remains the only 2015 first-round pick yet to sign his rookie contract, and it's likely due to a clause in the deal, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Mariota, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, reportedly hasn't signed the deal due to offset language in his contract.

"Mariota is still going to sign a contract worth four years, $24 million. About $16 million will come in the form of a signing bonus," Rapoport said Thursday on NFL Network. "This is about offset language."

Rapoport explained what offset language means: In the event Mariota were to be released in his fourth year, his new club would be mandated to assist the Titans in paying the final year of his rookie deal, citing Jameis Winston's offset language as an example.

It's very possible that this is a point of contention for Mariota and his representatives, along with Titans management.

"This could also be a precedent-setting issue for Marcus Mariota, which is something his agents are nervous about," Rapoport said. "If they give in and accept offset language, the issue might simply go away for the players."

Mariota said on June 23 that his contract would take some time to come to fruition. After missing the playoffs in six consecutive seasons, time and patience are running thin for Titans fans.
