NFL teams are always looking to gain an edge and several clubs have turned to drones to do so this offseason. The remote-controlled flying craft allow coaches to film practices from angles that were previously unattainable.

"You can coach better. You see hand placement, you see where they have their feet and where they have their eyes," Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said of the advantages offered by drones.

As it turns out, these teams at the bleeding edge of technology may have been breaking the law.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the Cowboys, New York Giants, and New England Patriots for using drones without first obtaining the necessary legal waivers, Bloomberg reports.

Outdoor commercial drone use is illegal without FAA permission. More than 600 individuals and businesses have sought and obtained waivers, Bloomerg reports, with most using drones to survey land.

There's no indication these three teams are in any serious legal trouble, but the era of drones buzzing over NFL practice fields may be short-lived.
