Patriots experimenting with pass rusher Jake Bequette at tight end

Stew Milne / US PRESSWIRE

If fourth-year pro Jake Bequette wants to make the New England Patriots' roster, he may have to quickly learn a new position.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound Bequette was a third-round pick of the Patriots in 2012 because of his defensive prowess. He flashed at Arkansas, making 31 tackles for loss and recording 23.5 sacks as an edge rusher.

Bequette has failed to carve out a similar role as a pro. Through three seasons, he has played in only eight games and he failed to get off the practice squad in 2014.

Perhaps as a last ditch effort, the Patriots are experimenting by having Bequette take some snaps at tight end at OTAs, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.

Bequette switched from tight end to defensive end at Arkansas, so he may have a bit of a leg up.

Reiss notes that the Patriots' decision to draft three defensive ends this year may have eliminated room for Bequette on the defensive depth chart, but also points out that the team isn't exactly hurting for tight ends, either.

Odds are stacked against Bequette making the 53-man roster, but the Patriots have proven willing to keep versatile role players around in the past.
