Jaguars hire John Idzik as special assistant to general manager

The Jacksonville Jaguars hired John Idzik as their special assistant to the general manager, according to Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union.

Idzik was hired as an adviser before free agency, counseling the team on player personnel decisions and the salary cap. Prior to joining the Jaguars, he was the general manager of the New York Jets from 2013-14, but was fired in December 2014.

"He'll do a little bit of everything," Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said to O'Halloran. "He's a great cultural fit for us. He has a great understanding of the salary cap and the different ways to do a contract. ...

"He has a great work ethic and a really good understanding of who's playing in the league," Caldwell said. "He really works at his craft."

Idzik put in a catastrophic performance as the Jets' general manager, mismanaging two consecutive drafts. However, the Jaguars are presenting him with a chance to redeem himself, something he's almost certainly aware of.

Jacksonville also promoted two other personnel executives.
