Still working his way back from a torn patellar tendon that brought an early end to his 2014 season, New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz is continuing to make progress toward his eventual return.

Head coach Tom Coughlin indicated as much at OTAs on Wednesday, explaining that Cruz was able to doing some work off to the side at the team's practice session.

Having suffered the injury relatively early last season, Cruz stands a reasonable chance at returning in time for the Giants' Week 1 opener on Sept. 13.

If indeed back at full strength, the 28-year-old would team up with electrifying second-year wideout Odell Beckham Jr. to give the Giants one of the NFL's most dangerous wide receiver tandems.

A former undrafted free agent, Cruz emerged as the Giants' No. 1 target after enjoying a breakout campaign in 2011, in which he recorded an impressive 82 receptions for 1,536 yards and nine touchdowns.
