Report: Chargers optimistic about reaching contract extension with Philip Rivers

The future of Philip Rivers as starting quarterback for the San Diego Chargers all of a sudden doesn't seem so bleak.

San Diego is optimistic it can reach a contract extension with the signal-caller, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Rivers was reportedly hesitant to sign an extension with the Chargers if they were going to move to Los Angeles, and persistent offseason rumors had the team sending him to the Tennessee Titans for the second overall pick.

The Chargers could very well still relocate, but their optimism about Rivers could mean he has softened his stance about the move.

The 33-year-old is entering the final year of his deal and coming off back-to-back seasons with more than 30 touchdown passes. Rivers has excelled in Mike McCoy's offense and has enjoyed a rebirth of sorts over the last two campaigns, with the luxury of more freedom to call plays at the line of scrimmage.

This next contract should be his last and San Diego will certainly be hoping it can get Rivers to retire a Charger.
