AFC West Notebook: Manning reflects on Letterman; Chargers looking to extend Rivers

Denver Broncos

Manning pens essay about Letterman experience. Peyton Manning appeared on "The Late Show with David Letterman" a number of times throughout his career, and wrote an essay for The MMQB about his admiration for the host. The Broncos quarterback also appeared on the show to present a top 10 list.

Smith investigated for child abuse. Broncos defensive end Antonio Smith is being investigated for child abuse after a complaint was filed. Smith signed a one-year deal with the Broncos during free agency.

Garland transitioning from National Guard to guard. Ben Garland serves in the Colorado Air National Guard, and faces a different challenge in attempting to crack the Broncos' roster as a guard - on a line that surrendered the fewest sacks in the NFL last year.

Kansas City Chiefs

Rogers sentenced to 1 day in jail. Wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers was sentenced to one day in jail, along with six months of probation, for a DUI incident. Rogers signed with the Chiefs in January.

Morse practicing snaps in hotel room. Chiefs rookie Mitch Morse is practicing snaps in his hotel room, as he's slated to play center in 2015. Morse primarily played at guard for Missouri and it may be a bit of a transition.

Sting's son tries out for Chiefs. WWE star Sting's son Steven Borden Jr. tried out for the Chiefs at tight end. Borden Jr. played tight end at Kentucky and is unfazed by the attention his father's fame garners.

San Diego Chargers

Chargers optimistic about extension for Rivers. The San Diego Chargers are reportedly gearing up to extend quarterback Philip Rivers, who's in the final season of his contract.

Spanos relinquishes control to sons. Chargers owner Dean Spanos relinquished day-to-day control of the team to his sons, Alexander Gus and John. Alex Spanos bought the club in 1984 and allowed Dean to take over in 1994.

Tomlinson believes Chargers will stay in San Diego. The Chargers and Raiders proposed a new stadium in Los Angeles County, but former Chargers star running back LaDainian Tomlinson believes the club will remain in San Diego.

Oakland Raiders

Smith takes on leadership role with Raiders. Malcolm Smith captured Super Bowl MVP honors two seasons ago as a member of the Seattle Seahawks. Now with the upstart Raiders, Smith is imparting his wisdom to the young club as they look to snap a 12-year playoff drought.

Carr's agent denies that client needs hand surgery. Derek Carr's agent, Tim Younger, denied that the Raiders quarterback requires hand surgery. Carr didn't participate in some workouts, but Younger said it's just a precaution.

Goodell says he hasn't heard from Oakland on relocation. With a number of teams aiming to relocate to Los Angeles, commissioner Roger Goodell took the Raiders to task for not communicating about their new stadium plan.
