Saints' Garrett Grayson upon arriving at rookie camp: 'Holy cow, that's Drew Brees'

To say quarterback Garrett Grayson was a little starstruck when he arrived at the New Orleans Saints' facility on Saturday for rookie camp would be a major understatement.

The Colorado State pivot and third-round pick will be backing up Drew Brees this season and when the perennial Pro Bowler made an appearance with his kids on Saturday, Grayson couldn't help but be in awe.

"I’m like, ‘Holy cow,’ you know. ‘That’s Drew Brees,’" Grayson told Mike Triplett of ESPN. "It’s still kind of like the deer-in-the-headlights kind of thing, because it’s a dream come true for me to be able to have this opportunity to learn from one of the best quarterbacks of all time."

Brees isn't showing any signs of slowing down at 36, but it will be Grayson's job to pick up the offense and prepare to take over whenever that time comes.

"That’s something I said through the process, combine, everything. I told all the teams that I met with I have no problem with sitting and learning from a guy like Drew Brees," Grayson said. “Because I kind of look at Aaron Rodgers and the success that he’s had, sitting behind Brett Favre. I think that’s helped him out a ton. I have no problem taking that route, and then being able to come in behind Drew Brees, and we won’t miss a beat."

For Grayson to eventually be the guy to replace Brees, he's going to have to prove himself to head coach Sean Payton. So far, things are going well in that regard.

"(Grayson) is a quick decision-maker. He’s got good arm strength, his athleticism, he’s in shape," Payton said. "He’s a quick study, and he’s very accurate."

Who knows, maybe years down the line a rookie will be saying, "Holy cow. That's Garrett Grayson."
