Smith, a fourth-round draft pick out of Kentucky, has been placed in Pernell McPhee's former role in the Baltimore defense, ESPN's Jamison Hensley reports.

Analysis:

McPhee filled a key role in the Ravens' defense the past two seasons, working as a versatile pass-rusher all over the formation. He signed a five-year, $38.75 million contract with the Bears this offseason, after notching 7.5 sacks in 2014. Smith is a similar player with the skills to work as an edge rusher on early downs and inside rusher on passing downs, but he can't be expected to match McPhee's impact as a fourth-round rookie. While he doesn't figure to have an IDP impact as a rookie, Smith could be groomed for a starting role in the future.
