Lions sign Greg Salas, Chris Owens to 1-year contracts

The Detroit Lions turned to the free-agent market in adding some veteran depth and competition to both sides of the ball Wednesday, signing wide receiver Greg Salas and cornerback Chris Owens to one-year deals.

A 2011 fourth-round selection of the St. Louis Rams, Salas has spent the majority of the past two seasons with the New York Jets, appearing in a total of 18 games and recording 16 reception for 310 yards.

Owens played the first four years of his career with the Atlanta Falcons after joining the team as a third-round draft pick in 2009. He moved on to play with both the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins in 2013 before settling into a role as the Kansas City Chiefs nickel/slot cornerback this past season.

Both Salas and Owens have spent the majority of their respective NFL careers as rotational players thus far, and they can be expected to compete for similar roles with the Lions in training camp this summer.
