Report: 8 teams placed waiver claims on D.J. Swearinger

Troy Taormina / USA TODAY Sports

Waived by the Houston Texans just two seasons into his NFL career, safety D.J. Swearinger had plenty of teams interested in giving him a second chance prior to being claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday.

Including the Buccaneers, a total of eight teams placed waiver claims on the Texans' former second-round draft selection, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

All with a potential need for competition or depth at safety, the other teams to put in claims for Swearinger were the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens.

Houston parting ways with the 23-year-old just two years after making him a second-round pick is anything but a positive sign for his development, but the talent that once made him worthy of such a selection still had a number of teams intrigued.

With the Buccaneers, Swearinger can be expected to compete for the starting strong safety role, contributing most as a physical in-the-box presence against the run.
