Ravens GM Newsome wants more out of Matt Elam, Arthur Brown

The Baltimore Ravens had high expectations for safety Matt Elam and linebacker Arthur Brown after selecting them in the first and second round, respectively, of the 2013 NFL Draft.

So far, though, those expectations haven't been met. Elam lost his starting job in 2014 after two lackluster seasons and Brown appeared in just four games, failing to record a tackle.

"I think it's readily known that we have not been satisfied with the way (Elam's) played thus far," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said during a conference call with season-ticket holders, according to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. "And I don't think Matt has been satisfied with the way he's played thus far."

Elam is looking noticeably leaner these days after following a diligent workout regimen and stricter diet. He hopes those changes will translate to improved performance on the field.

"I lost 5 percent body fat, I got myself stronger than I've ever been," Elam said. "The offseason went well. I'm ready to start the season. I'm ready to play ball again."

As for Brown, he has been trying to add weight while maintaining his speed. But the biggest task for him this season will be finding playing time behind starters C.J. Mosley and Daryl Smith.

"Arthur Brown is another young man who, at this point of his career, needs to find a way to get to the field," Newsome said. "When you've got C.J. Mosley and Daryl Smith playing at a very high level, it’s hard for someone like Arthur to get to the field.

"If those guys (Brown and Elam) put forth the effort and show the improvement that we think they should show, then both of them will get a chance to be on the field this year."
