Report: 49ers still interested in linebacker Lance Briggs

The San Francisco 49ers are still interested in bringing in veteran linebacker Lance Briggs, according to Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee.

Briggs, 34, visited with the team in March but remains unsigned.

After losing linebackers Patrick Willis and Chris Borland to retirement, the 49ers brought in Desmond Bishop, Nick Bellore, and Philip Wheeler via free agency, but did not take a linebacker in the draft.

They are still looking for help at the position, with NaVorro Bowman recovering from an ACL-MCL injury. Another option would be to move outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks inside, something general manager Trent Baalke hasn't ruled out.

"Well, he's played inside before," Baalke said recently. "He's played inside in our goal-line packages as (recently) as last year. Never say never. He's versatile. Ahmad has played in there, so he's a guy you can cross train. But right now, he's starting at outside linebacker. We are going to take all these guys, put them out there on the practice field, let the coaches decide who plays, where they play and how they play."

Briggs told Barrows on Monday he was staying in shape, but was unaware of an imminent deal with the 49ers.
