Browns select Miami running back Duke Johnson in 3rd round

BEREA, Ohio (AP) Ignoring playmakers in the first two rounds, the Cleveland Browns selected Miami running back Duke Johnson with the No. 77 pick in the NFL draft on Friday night.

Johnson gained 1.652 yards last season, finishing as the leading rusher in school history with 3,519 yards in just three seasons. A shifty runner, the 5-foot-9, 207-pound Johnson has great burst and better-than-average hands.

Cleveland wanted to add depth to their backfield after releasing veteran Ben Tate last season and using rookies Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell as their primary backs.

Johnson returned kickoffs as a freshman, and could help the Browns return game.

Earlier, the Browns selected Utah defensive end Nate Orchard, who had 18 1-2 sacks last season, in the second round.
