The Cleveland Browns have selected defensive tackle Danny Shelton out of Washington with the 12th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

The Browns get a lot stouter in the middle of their improving defense by adding the big, powerful tackle. Shelton celebrated the selection by bear hugging NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on the draft stage.

Rumors had swirled for months that the Browns were looking to trade up to select quarterback Marcus Mariota, but that was not to be. Instead, the Browns get the top nose tackle in the 2015 draft class, a consolation prize they will treasure.

Browns general manager Ray Farmer will now look to the 19th overall pick where the Browns could address defense again or upgrade their receiving corps in an effort to support young quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Strengths

  • Strong ability to shed multiple blockers in running game.
  • Excellent short-area quickness in short-yardage, goal-line situations.
  • Awareness on short passes, very good sideline-to-sideline speed for his size.
  • Gets hands up quickly at line of scrimmage to deflect passes.
  • Blocks A and B gaps exceptionally well.

Weaknesses

  • Struggles to make progress downfield if first move doesn't work in pass-rush scenarios.
  • Appears to have limited arsenal of moves, relying solely on raw strength to beat offensive linemen.
  • Makes less plays in second half due to fatigue and can appear to be worn down late in games.
