After missing all of the San Francisco 49ers' organized team activities in 2014, tight end Vernon Davis is changing his approach heading into a contract year.

Improving upon last year's downturn is priority No. 1.

"I'm here this year because I want to get better," Davis said on Friday, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea. "I want to win. I want to develop some chemistry amongst my teammates and get to know the guys. There are a lot of new guys here. And you just never know when this game is going to be over for you."

Coming off the worst season of his career, catching just 26 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns, Davis says that seeing teammates walk away from the game has given him a fresh outlook on what it takes to remain playing at a high level.

“Patrick Willis put everything in perspective for a lot of guys around here with him retiring. That just gave me some insight and put a good taste in my mouth, as far as my approach toward the game and giving this game all I can give it and taking it one day at a time and giving my best.”

Last season, Davis forfeited $270,000 for failing to reach his workout bonus and not attending mandatory minicamp.
