Report: Steelers re-sign Will Allen

Timothy T. Ludwig / US PRESSWIRE

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a move to address their depth in the defensive backfield Friday, re-signing veteran safety Will Allen, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.

Allen was active for all 16 regular-season games in 2014, making four starts and tallying 36 tackles.

Though Thursday's retirement of long-time safety Troy Polamalu will almost certainly make the safety position a realistic draft target for the Steelers later this month, Allen should now be in line to compete for a starting role.

Allen first joined the Steelers in 2010 after spending the first six seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Aside from a brief five-game stint with the Dallas Cowboys in 2013, he's been a key reserve for the team since that point.
