The New York Giants have selected defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa out of UCLA with the 74th overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.

A strong presence against both the run and pass, Odighizuwa should have an opportunity to compete for a starting role opposite star defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul as a rookie.

The UCLA standout was considered by many to be a potential first-round pick, thus providing the Giants with some incredible value in the third round as they continue to retool their defense.

Strengths

  • Has the size and athleticism to contribute as a well-balanced edge defender in either a 4-3 or 3-4 defensive front.
  • Elite explosiveness traits that should translate well to the next level.
  • Always plays with a high motor and consistently gets off the line of scrimmage with impressive burst.
  • Often lined up on the interior defensive front, demonstrating his strength at the point of attack against the run.

Weaknesses

  • Despite an impressive get-off and straight-line explosiveness, concerns about his change-of-direction skills could impact his ability to win in confined spaces.
  • Possesses the necessary physical traits, but will need to improve his pass-rush technique to maximize talent.
  • Won't contribute much dropping into coverage.
