The Green Bay Packers traded up to select quarterback Brett Hundley out of UCLA in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

It's a curious move to say the least. At best, Hundley will serve as backup to Aaron Rodgers. Assuming Rodgers stays healthy over the next several years, Hundley will play out his rookie contract and hit free agency without seeing significant action.

Perhaps the Packers saw something in Hundley and were simply unwilling to pass on his potential. They hit the jackpot after letting Rodgers develop on the sidelines for several years and may try to go down that road again.

To move up, the Packers sent picks No. 166 and 247 to the New England Patriots.

Strengths

  • Athleticism is exceptional. He can be a dual-threat QB at the NFL level even if he ran a slower 40 time than expected. Relies more on agility and instincts as a runner than speed.
  • Flashes unlimited potential with his physical tools. Arm strength allows him to make any throw and he isn't afraid to take shots deep down the field.
  • Smooth delivery and good arm mechanics will allow him to focus on developing other areas of his game in the NFL. Game does not need to be completely overhauled.

Weaknesses

  • Footwork is an issue. His lack of fundamentals affects his ability to be consistently accurate. Would not pass the Bill Walsh test that links feet to accuracy.
  • Not a quick decision-maker. Takes too much time to go through reads and struggles to read defenses from a pre-snap standpoint.
  • Lacks instincts or an internal clock. Hundley breaks the pocket too quickly at times. Does not allow routes to develop. When he does, he gets locked on receivers and takes too many sacks.
  • UCLA head coach Jim Mora doubts his ability to succeed at the next level. That's a huge knock from a known quarterback developer who has extensive knowledge of Hundley.
