Former New England Patriots defensive lineman Armond Armstead was forced to retire due to health issues in 2014, and new details about those health troubles have come to light.

Armstead suffered a heart attack in 2014 before calling it quits, according to a recent report from Andy Furillo of the Sacramento Bee.

The USC product is currently involved in a lawsuit against his former school for giving him painkillers that he claims led to a 2011 heart attack.

The Patriots signed Armstead in 2013 after he impressed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League on the condition he would have a hole in his heart surgically repaired.

Armstead never played in a game for the Patriots, missing the entire 2013 campaign while recovering from an infection.
