Broncos' Kubiak: C.J. Anderson will begin offseason as starter

The Denver Broncos have multiple options in the backfield, with C.J. Anderson, Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman packing the depth chart.

As of now though, Anderson will get the first crack at carries.

"He made a big jump as a player, and I think he's earned the right to walk into the offseason program — the OTAs — and line up as our starter," head coach Gary Kubiak told the team's official website. “But he’s got to continue to earn it on a daily basis."

"I think he’s shown he has all the ability to be an excellent starter in this league, so we’re really looking forward to working with him.”

Anderson was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2013, while Ball and Hillman were second- and third-round picks respectively. It's rare for a team to force high draft picks to sit behind undrafted players at the same position, but Kubiak has no allegiance to the former regime's draft picks.

He will simply play the best player.

"I think all three of those guys...have all kind of had their little spurts of success with the club when they've had their opportunity," Kubiak said. "But they're all young. Who’s going to be the bell cow, who’s going to play every down, who's going to be the three-down player, they've got to sort that out. C.J. has shown the flashes of doing that."

All of that said, a lot can change between now and the start of the season, so Anderson's spot at the top of the depth chart is nowhere near secure.
