Report: Giants' Victor Cruz not close to returning to field

If the New York Giants can ever get receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz on the field at the same time, they could have one of the NFL's best wide receiving duos.

Beckham missed the first four weeks of the 2014 season with hamstring issues and, shortly after his debut, Cruz was lost for the season with a torn patellar tendon.

While Cruz is reportedly progressing in his recovery from one of the most devastating injuries an athlete can suffer, Jordan Raanan of NJ.com reports the veteran wideout is nowhere close to returning to the field.

The Giants don't know when Cruz will be ready or how much of an impact he'll have this season. The list of players who've returned from a patellar tendon tear to make an impact in their first year back is short.

"I think he'll be the player that he was and hopefully better," head coach Tom Coughlin told reporters Wednesday at the NFL Annual Meeting. "But as far as when, I would be careful what I would say there. Hopefully it's the first game. If it isn't, we've done that one before. We just went through it (last season with Beckham)."

If Cruz isn't ready for the start of training camp, he's a candidate for the PUP list.
