Chargers HC Mike McCoy: 'We plan on Philip Rivers retiring a Charger'

Phil Sears / USA TODAY Sports

If the San Diego Chargers have their way, Philip Rivers will remain under center for the foreseeable future.

Rivers made headlines last week when he said he would be hesitant to sign an extension if the team moved to Los Angeles. Rumors also swirled that the Chargers already had a plan in place for Rivers' departure.

Chargers head coach Mike McCoy tried to clear things up Tuesday at the owners meetings, saying he wants Rivers to retire with the franchise.

"The only thing I'm worried about is this next season," McCoy said. "We can't worry about 2016 and beyond. He's under contract for this year, and we plan on Philip Rivers retiring a Charger."

Rivers is heading into the final year of his contract and the Chargers would no doubt like to lock him up before he becomes a free agent, but the signal-caller has indicated that he will likely play out the final year of his contract

The 33-year-old has flourished over the past two seasons under McCoy, throwing for more than 32 touchdowns and more than 4,000 yards in each campaign.
