Jaguars GM says team wasn't close to Eagles' offer for DeMarco Murray

The Jacksonville Jaguars were one of several clubs in contention to sign DeMarco Murray earlier this month, but it doesn't appear that the running back left any money on the table when he decided to join the Philadelphia Eagles.

Asked Monday at the NFL owners meetings about his team's pursuit of Murray, general manager Dave Caldwell told reporters that the Eagles' five-year, $42-million offer far exceeded that of the Jaguars.

Though Caldwell declined to get into specifics of Jacksonville's proposed deal to this year's top free-agent running back, he did say that the Eagles gave Murray more than an additional $2 million per season.

"We were serious about him and we were probably the second-best offer he had," Caldwell said. "We just needed the deal to get done quicker than they were willing to do it. Philly got a great player and we’re excited with the players we got."

Despite coming up short in the race for the reigning rushing champion, the Jaguars have undoubtedly been among the NFL's most active teams so far this offseason.

After adding tight end Julius Thomas, offensive tackle Jermey Parnell, defensive tackle Jared Odrick and cornerback Davon House to an already intriguing group of young talent, the Jaguars may now be just one productive draft away from once again becoming a playoff contender.
