Lovie Smith says Buccaneers haven't committed to taking quarterback with 1st pick

With the last two Heisman Trophy winners eligible in next month's upcoming NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are widely expected to select Jameis Winston with the first overall pick.

It's not a done deal, however.

Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith acknowledged the franchise-caliber talent at quarterback in this summer's draft, but did not commit to selecting either Winston or Oregon's Marcus Mariota.

"I just know I can see why people would assume that we are going to take a quarterback," Smith said to NFL Media's Steve Wyche. "They're two excellent quarterbacks that are available at the top. And when you get a chance to draft someone like that most of the time people do. But there are other good players in the draft also. I think it's a deep draft."

Conventional wisdom dictates that Smith's comments should be taken with an entire bag of salt, but there are a number of high-end edge rushers that the Buccaneers could conceivably choose.

"We have a good quarterback we feel like, Mike Glennon, on our roster right now," Smith said. "We realize that they're two excellent quarterbacks out there. We're kind of going through the process right now. We're trying to improve our ball club."

Tampa Bay would be wise to select a potentially franchise-altering quarterback with the first overall pick, but stranger things have certainly happened at the draft in years' past.
