Giants' John Mara: This year's free-agent class was 'mediocre'

Rather than make a big splash in the free agency pool, the New York Giants have been focused on adding depth to their roster. Co-owner John Mara says there's a simple reason behind the team's thriftiness: there wasn't much worth throwing their money at.

"There were obviously some star players out there, but for the most part I thought it was a mediocre free-agent class,'' Mara told reporters Thursday, according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post

Mara said the Giants inquired about defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, but his price tag was well out of their range. They also made a push for safety Devin McCourty, but he chose to re-sign with the New England Patriots.

"And I think a lot of guys got paid more money than maybe they would have in other years because there was a lot of cap room out there," Mara continued. "I think the guys who we got will help us, but we still have a long way to go."

The Giants have yet to address their need for pass-rush help, though they did take a look at former Dallas Cowboys defensive end George Selvie on Thursday, Schwartz reports. Selvie was invited to a minicamp tryout for the Giants in 2013, but the team opted not to sign him at that time.
