Jets GM compares Darrelle Revis to Champ Bailey

Brace Hemmelgarn / USA TODAY Sports

Mike Maccagnan pulled off quite a coup in his first offseason as general manager of the New York Jets, reuniting the formidable cornerback duo of Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie.

Revis starred for the Super Bowl-champion New England Patriots last season, and was selected as a first-team All-Pro in his lone campaign with the club.

The 29-year-old star signed with the Jets in free agency, joining the team for his second stint after beginning his career with the franchise.

Maccagnan wasted no time showering praise on Revis, comparing the shutdown cornerback to 12-time Pro Bowler Champ Bailey.

"Champ was able to play at a very high level well into his 30s," Maccagnan said to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "I kind of see Darrelle as the same status. He's playing at a very high level, and we thought he'd be able to play at that level for a number of years going forward, so we thought it was worth the financial investment we made."

Cimini noted that Maccagnan was part of the Washington Redskins' scouting staff when the franchise selected Bailey seventh overall in the 1999 NFL Draft.

Revis will be 30 entering the 2015 season but has shown no signs of slowing down. He's now the centerpiece of a terrifying revamped Jets defense.
