The Oakland Raiders have signed free-agent running back Trent Richardson, opting to take a chance on the talent that made him an early first-round selection in 2012.

Richardson signed a two-year contract worth $3.9 million that can reach a total value of $8 million based on various incentives, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

Selected third overall by the Cleveland Browns in 2012, Richardson's three-year NFL career has been disappointing thus far.

The Browns traded him to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a first-round selection just two games into his second year, and Richardson continued to struggle until ultimately being released by the Colts following the 2014 campaign.

While he remains a notable name at just 23 years old, and should be afforded the opportunity to compete for the starting job, Richardson projects as nothing more than a backup to Latavius Murray and Roy Helu in Oakland's backfield rotation going forward.

Running for 2,032 yards on 614 attempts, Richardson has averaged just 3.3 yards per carry over the course of his career.
