Justin Smith meets with 49ers, status remains uncertain for 2015

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Justin Smith arrived at the team's offices Wednesday, purportedly meeting head coach Jim Tomsula, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

Smith hasn't committed to the club for the 2015 season, but is a huge fan of Tomsula's, and the new head coach may be enough to coax him into another year with the 49ers.

Tomsula was previously the 49ers' defensive line coach, before being promoted to head coach, supplanting former defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Fangio became the Chicago Bears' defensive coordinator shortly afterwards.

Smith recorded 43 tackles, five sacks and two forced fumbles. The 35-year-old has spent the past seven seasons with the 49ers. Previous to the 49ers, Smith spent his first seven years with the Cincinnati Bengals. Cincinnati selected Smith with the fourth overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft.

If Smith doesn't return to San Francisco, the team will be hard-pressed to find someone who can replicate his incredible functional strength and ability to defeat double teams consistently.
