Australian rugby star Jarryd Hayne announced Monday he will sign a contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

After announcing he would be leaving the National Rugby League in October 2014, Hayne met with the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions before finally deciding on the 49ers.

Reports surfaced earlier Monday that Hayne had signed a futures contract with the Lions, but he changed his mind, apparently preferring the lifestyle in San Francisco to that of Detroit.

The contract includes $100,000 guaranteed with the 49ers, and Hayne said during his press conference it was the only guaranteed offer he received.

During his press conference, Hayne credited incoming head coach Jim Tomsula with recruiting him and convincing him to join the 49ers.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder, who reportedly runs a 4.6-second 40-yard dash, will likely play the running back position in the NFL.
