Dolphins place transition tag on Charles Clay

Matt Marton / USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins have placed the transition tag on tight end Charles Clay.

Coming off a season in which he caught 58 passes for 605 yards and three touchdowns, Clay will be paid $7.07 million, per the tag.

Miami has the right to first refusal on any offer for Clay under stipulations of the tag.

General manager Dennis Hickey released a statement Monday saying, "We have used this option available to us with Charles with the hope that he continues to remain a member of the Miami Dolphins."

Clay can negotiate with other teams and if he signs with another club, the Dolphins do not receive any compensation. They can, however, match any offer he gets from an outside club.

The 26-year-old was used sparingly as a fullback in 2013.
