Dolphins release Cortland Finnegan

The Miami Dolphins have released veteran cornerback Cortland Finnegan, the team announced Monday.

Finnegan joined the Dolphins on a two-year free-agent deal last spring, but a relatively disappointing 2014 campaign in which he was held without an interception forced the team to part ways.

Though a desire get younger at the cornerback position likely played a significant factor in the decision, the Dolphins will also save $5.475 million against the salary cap with Finnegan's release.

Similar to wide receiver - another position the Dolphins chose to clear out in recent days - cornerback is now one of the team's top offseason needs.

Having made a number of moves to save money against the cap, with several more still possible in the coming weeks, Miami will have some increased financial flexibility when it comes to bolstering its roster in free agency.
