NFC East Notebook: Maclin not far from new deal; Coughlin expected to sign 1-year extension

Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys planning for another five years of Romo. Though Tony Romo's future will continue to be something the Cowboys monitor going forward, the team is planning on its star quarterback playing for another five years.

Murray could see less carries if he returns. After setting a single-season franchise record for rushing attempts in 2014, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones suggests that DeMarco Murray could have a reduced workload if he returns to the team next season.

Claiborne still a question mark. Still recovering from a torn patellar tendon, the uncertain status of former first-round pick Morris Claiborne is creating some questions at the Cowboys' cornerback position.

Philadelphia Eagles

Eagles release Herremans. After 10 seasons in Philadelphia, Todd Herremans' time with the team has come to and end. The Eagles released the veteran offensive lineman Thursday, saving $2.8 million against the salary cap.

Maclin not far from new deal. Re-signing wide receiver Jeremy Maclin is the Eagles' top offseason priority, and as Jeff McLane of Philly.com indicates, the two sides aren't significantly far apart in negotiations.

Mariota to Eagles becoming a popular pick. The ties between Chip Kelly and Marcus Mariota have many suggesting that the Eagles will find a way to trade up and select the Oregon quarterback in the first round of April's draft.

New York Giants

Giants planning to use franchise tag on Pierre-Paul. Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul was set to become one of the top free agents available this offseason, but the Giants are reportedly prepared to use the franchise tag to keep that from happening.

Coughlin expected to sign one-year extension. The Giants and head coach Tom Coughlin have long been headed toward a contract extension and the expectation is that he'll soon sign on for another year.

Kiwanuka, Hillis released. As they prepare for the offseason ahead, the Giants have saved some space against the salary cap by parting ways with linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka and running back Peyton Hillis.

Washington Redskins

Redskins to meet with Casey, Jean Francois. Getting an early start on free agency, the Redskins have signed defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois and are scheduled to meet with tight end James Casey.

Gruden hoping for progress from RG3. Already having announced him as the starting quarterback heading into 2015, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden is hoping to see some "major progress" from Robert Griffin III.

Redskins to increase spending. With league rules dictating that each team reach minimum cash spending levels over a four-year span, the Redskins are one of several clubs facing an increase to reach their requirements.
