49ers among teams interested in Australian rugby star Jarryd Hayne

The San Francisco 49ers are one of several NFL teams showing an interest in Australian rugby star Jarryd Hayne, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports.

Hayne's agent, Jack Bechta, told Barrows that his client worked out for the 49ers in December and has also met with the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions.

Australia's Daily Telegraph reported Sunday that Hayne is expected to sign a futures contract with the Lions, but Bechta told Barrows on Tuesday there is no deal in place and that his client will likely make a decision by early next week.

"(San Francisco general manager) Trent (Baalke) and his team had a blueprint for how they could help Jared succeed that was very intriguing and on point," Bechta said.

Bechta noted that while Hayne has no experience playing American football, he is familiar with punt-like situations, which occur throughout rugby matches.

"They're used to guys coming at them on the run, used to using their peripheral vision," he said. "In terms of being a ready-made punt returner, it's very, very natural."
