Downtown stadium seems unlikely for Chargers

The San Diego Chargers are running out of time to reach an agreement for a new stadium, and possibly out of locations.

San Diego was looking at options on the current site where Qualcomm Stadium is located as well as in the downtown area.

However, a recent analysis by the Metropolitan Transit System, who would need to move their yard in order for the Chargers to build downtown, stated that could take five-to-seven years and potentially cost $150 million.

Mark Fabiani, who is leading a group tasked with solving the Chargers' stadium issue, said building a stadium downtown near Petco Park is becoming unlikely.

"Our analysis of the site, performed by a well-known national construction and engineering firm, was not nearly so pessimistic," Fabiani told ESPN.

"But, having said that, there is simply no sign that the hotel lobby is willing to support a joint-use facility downtown, and we understand that (San Diego Convention Chair) Steve Cushman is now preparing an alternative convention center financing plan. In light of those facts, discussion of a downtown site is quickly becoming academic."

The Chargers recently announced a proposal with the Oakland Raiders to build a shared stadium in Carson, Calif. if they can't solve the stadium issue.
