Broncos to use franchise tag on Demaryius Thomas barring long-term deal

The Denver Broncos are willing to do anything necessary to bring their star wide receiver back in 2015.

The Broncos will use the franchise tag on Demaryius Thomas if the two sides can't reach an agreement on a long-term deal, general manager John Elway confirmed Thursday.

While a multi-year contract should remain the goal for both parties either way, the Broncos using the franchise tag would keep other teams from getting involved in negotiations for at least another season.

Thomas managed to put together the most productive campaign of his five-year career in 2014, tallying 111 receptions for 1,619 yards and 11 touchdowns.

With Peyton Manning widely expected to play next season, Thomas's return would likely ensure that the Broncos once again field the kind of high-powered passing attack that has long made the team a Super Bowl contender.
