Report: Fangio would still be with 49ers had Gase been hired as head coach

Had the San Francisco 49ers hired Adam Gase as their head coach, Vic Fangio would have remained on as defensive coordinator, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.

Fangio, who was the first candidate to interview for the 49ers' head-coaching job following the departure of Jim Harbaugh, was Gase's top choice to run San Francisco's defense, Maiocco reports.

Tim Kawakami of the Mercury News reported Sunday that Gase was offered the job, but turned it down because it was contingent on Jim Tomsula being promoted from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator.

However, one source told Maiocco that it was never stressed to Gase during his interview process with the 49ers that Tomsula's coaching status would be a deal-breaker. The source added that Gase intended to keep Tomsula as defensive line coach with a title promotion, but a day after his second interview with the 49ers, the team decided to promote Tomsula to head coach instead.

General manager Trent Baalke later denied ever offering the job to Gase.

"The job was offered to one person and one person only, and that was Jim Tomsula," Baalke said.

Fangio had no interest in remaining on Tomsula's staff and was released from his contract, Maiocco reports. He and Gase were both hired by the Chicago Bears in January as defensive and offensive coordinator, respectively.
