Combine 101: An in-depth look at the events of the NFL Scouting Combine

Brian Spurlock / USA TODAY Sports

The 2015 NFL Scouting Combine is fast approaching and what better way to prepare than by learning about the ins and outs of each event.

Get an inside look at the history of the combine and what to expect from this year's future NFLers as we break down all the events.

40-Yard Dash

The 40-yard dash is the unquestioned main event of the combine. No other test can impact the draft stock of a player in both directions. Post a good time, and watch your value skyrocket to another level. But finish with a sub-par time, and there's no telling how far you might fall.

Bench Press

Football is a game of strength and nothing exemplifies that more than the bench press. Putting on a good show here can illustrate to scouts that a player has what it takes to hold his own against grown men in the NFL.

Vertical Jump

Whether it's batting down a pass, blocking a field goal or making a play on a jump ball, having the ability to outjump your opponent is critical at the pro level.

Broad Jump

The broad jump may seem like it has nothing to do with an actual football game, but looks can be deceiving. The event can show how explosive a player is using their lower body and thus how fast they can get off the line of scrimmage.

3-Cone Drill

The 3-cone drill isn't going to win any excitement awards at the combine, but the short bursts and changes of direction it requires are telling. The movements in the drill translate well to an actual game and scouts will be looking for who can perform the event with fluidity.

Shuttle Run

Lateral movement is critical at the line scrimmage, as well as during the shuttle run. Quick feet and the ability to fire out of a stance can make all the difference in posting a strong time.
