Bret Bielema didn't take Dolphins job in 2012 because they overlooked Russell Wilson

The course of recent NFL history could have been altered in a 2012 meeting with the Miami Dolphins, according to a recent article by ESPN's Elizabeth Merrill

Bret Bielema, Arkansas's current head coach, had an interview with the Miami Dolphins for their head coaching job at the time.

Bielema tried to convince the Dolphins to select quarterback Russell Wilson in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft, believing his former Wisconsin protege would lead the club to a Super Bowl title.

Miami's management remained unconvinced, and Bielema stayed at Wisconsin for one more season before leaving for Arkansas in December 2012.

"They all looked at me like, 'You can't say that. That's the difference between college and pro. He's undersized. He can't throw,'" Bielema said to Merrill. "I was like, 'OK, all right,' and I honestly, that day, kind of pulled myself out of it."

Wilson led the Seattle Seahawks to their first Super Bowl victory in just his second season, and has a chance to win his second title in three years with a win against the New England Patriots on Sunday.

Miami ended up hiring Joe Philbin, who has a 23-25 record in three seasons and has yet to lead the Dolphins to the playoffs.
