Colts' Adam Vinatieri on narrow goal posts: 'I'm not really a big fan of it'

After struggling with the narrowed goal posts in Sunday's Pro Bowl, Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri is hoping the league doesn't choose to make a permanent change to the uprights.

"If this is something that's going to change, I definitely need to start working on it," Vinatieri said after the game, according to the Indianapolis Star's Stephen Holder. "I'll go back and look at them … but I think I probably would've made all my kicks on normal (goal) posts."

Vinatieri, a future Hall of Famer and the NFL's most accurate kicker throughout the 2014 regular season, finished the Pro Bowl with misses on one of his three field-goal attempts and two of four extra points.

The 42-year-old worries that the narrowed uprights would change the game significantly, resulting in far too many missed kicks when dealing with unfavorable field conditions.

"I'll go in and speak my two cents on it, but I'm not really a big fan of it," he said. "The game will change a bunch. If that's what they're looking for, then so be it. But there will be a lot of kicks missed. We had a nice night with not a lot of wind. If you get a crummy field in crummy weather, you're going to have a lot of two-point conversions."

It remains to be seen whether or not permanent adjustments to the kicking game will be implemented anytime soon, but Sunday's experiment indicates the league is at least entertaining the idea.
