Browns express interest in re-signing Brian Hoyer

With their quarterback situation still very much in flux, the Cleveland Browns haven't yet ruled out the possibility of Brian Hoyer returning in 2015.

The Browns have already reached out to the six-year veteran, expressing interest in working out a contract extension, Hoyer's agent, Joe Linta, told the Akron Beacon Journal's Nate Ulrich.

"We never got to the numbers part," Linta said Satuday. "They called and said they were interested in bringing him back."

Though Hoyer would be open to a return, Linta insists his client is looking to compete for a starting job.

I think the only thing that would make him not (want to) come back is if they said (Johnny) Manziel or whoever we take in the draft or whoever we sign in free agency is going to be the starter and you will only be the backup. I think that would probably drive him away a little bit. If Pettine said, ‘Hey, it’s going to be an open competition again between you and Johnny,’ great, let’s go. ... (Hoyer) wants to play. The kid wants to have an opportunity to compete and play.

Hoyer guided the Browns to a 7-6 record in 13 games as the starter before being benched in favor of the rookie Manziel down the stretch.

While the assumption was that Manziel would take over as the Browns' full-time starter next season, his struggles on and off the field appear to have the organization exploring all options at the position.
