Report: Jets unlikely to hire Jim Harbaugh as next head coach

With Jim Harbaugh's tenure in San Francisco reportedly nearing an end, speculation continues to grow about where he might end up.

The New York Jets are among the teams rumored as a potential landing spot for Harbaugh, who has one year remaining on his contract with the 49ers. But according to Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated, he's likely headed elsewhere:

Thamel reports that the industry belief is that it's between the Oakland Raiders and the University of Michigan. He also reports that Michigan is in much better shape to land Harbaugh than it was six weeks ago.

49ers general manager Trent Baalke confirmed Tuesday that Michigan has reached out to the organization about Harbaugh. However, Baalke made it clear that a decision on Harbaugh's future won't be made until after Sunday, when the 49ers play their final game of the season.

The Jets have yet to address their coaching situation, but it's widely believed they'll be moving on without Rex Ryan.

"It's expected," Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson said Tuesday, referring to sweeping changes, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. "You just have to prepare, prepare for the worst."
