Cowboys clinch NFC East with 42-7 win over Colts

Joe Nicholson / USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys came out firing against an overmatched Indianapolis Colts team, winning 42-7 in a game that was never close.

The Cowboys clinched the NFC East title for the first time since 2009 and are still alive for a top-two seed and first-round bye.

It will be difficult for the Colts to regroup from this embarrassing loss and they may have nothing left to play for as their division is locked up and seeding in the AFC all but determined.

The Philadelphia Eagles are now eliminated from playoff contention.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Tony Romo completed 18 of 20 passes for 218 yards and four touchdowns in his best game of the season.
  • With the game all but over, the Colts sat Andrew Luck in the third quarter.
  • Dez Bryant and Jason Witten combined for 12 receptions for 163 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Dwayne Allen (knee) and Jerrell Freeman (hamstring) both left the game with injuries that could impact the Colts' season going forward.
  • Troy Aikman was passed by Tony Romo for first all-time in Cowboys' passing yards.
