Steelers roll past Chiefs to clinch playoff berth

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially locked up a playoff spot Sunday, riding a dominant defensive performance to a 20-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. With the loss, the Chiefs are in need of a win and a lot of help elsewhere in Week 17.

Here's what you need to know:

  • The Steelers defense bent but didn't break in this one, holding the Chiefs out of the end zone and limiting them to four field goals.
  • Most notably, the unit was able to eliminate the effectiveness of Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, allowing just 29 yards on his nine attempts.
  • Alex Smith threw for 311 yards - his highest total of the year -  but difficulties on third down and in pass protection saw he and the Chiefs offense unable to take advantage.
  • Ben Roethlisberger led the way for the Steelers' offense, completing 18 of 25 passes for 220 yards and one touchdown. He overcame a knee injury to stay in the game and help seal the win.
  • Le'Veon Bell was once again held under 100 rushing yards, but the emerging superstar still managed to find the end zone for the eighth time in the past five games.
  • The Steelers' defense was able to force the Chiefs into a number of passing situations throughout the game, capitalizing with pressure that produced a total of six sacks.
  • Pittsburgh reached the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
