Patriots clinch 1st-round bye with narrow win over Jets

The New England Patriots edged the New York Jets 17-16 on Sunday afternoon to clinch a first-round bye. 

The Patriots improved to 12-3 with the win, while the Jets fell to 3-12.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Jets center Nick Mangold was carted off the field midway through the second quarter after suffering a left ankle injury. 
  • The Jets had one of their best defensive performances of the season, sacking Tom Brady three times in the first quarter and once in the second quarter. 
  • Brady completed 23 of 35 passes for 182 yards with one touchdown and an interception.
  • Jets quarterback Geno Smith also finished with one touchdown and an interception, completing 17 of 27 passes for 210 yards.
  • Patriots running back Jonas Gray suffered an apparent left foot/ankle injury early in the second quarter, but was able to return after getting taped up by the medical staff. He rushed for five yards and a touchdown on six carries.
  • Jets linebacker David Harris teamed up with Calvin Pace in the first quarter on the 1,000th sack of his career.
  • Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson returned after missing the past three games with a toe injury, notching two tackles and half a sack.
  • Jets rookie cornerback Marcus Williams recorded the first pick of his career in the fourth quarter.
