Redskins rally to defeat Eagles on last-minute FG; Lions clinch playoff berth

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Redskins defeated Philadelphia 27-24 on Saturday, delivering a crushing blow to the Eagles' playoff hopes.

The Eagles' loss also clinched a playoff berth for the Detroit Lions.

Kai Forbath kicked a 26-yard field goal with five seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Robert Griffin III went 16-of-23 for 220 yards, no touchdowns and an interception but had arguably his best game of the season.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Mark Sanchez fumbled on the first drive of the game, after being strip-sacked by Redskins defensive end Ryan Kerrigan. It was the Eagles league-leading 34th giveaway. Washington added a field goal on the ensuing drive and Kerrigan has recorded 13.5 sacks.
  • Sanchez played well for the Eagles, going 37-of-50 for 374 yards and two touchdowns. However, Sanchez's lone interception of the game came in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter and allowed the Redskins to finish off the Eagles on a last-minute field goal.
  • The first half saw three lead changes, with the Eagles ahead 14-10 at halftime.
  • Redskins wide receiver/returner Andre Roberts fumbled the kick return to open the second half, providing the Eagles with excellent field position. On the ensuing drive, Eagles kicker Cody Parkey missed a 34-yard field goal, failing to capitalize on Roberts' blunder. It was the first of Parkey's two missed field goals in the quarter.
  • Alfred Morris has ran for over 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons. Only one other Redskins player, Stephen Davis, has had three consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns. Morris scored on a 28-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and finished with 83 yards, a touchdown on 21 carries
  • Darrel Young scored two identical one-yard touchdowns in the third quarter, giving the Redskins a 24-14 lead.
  • Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper caught two touchdown passes, finishing with five catches for 53 yards.
  • Eagles tight end Zach Ertz ended up with a game-high 15 catches.
