Buccaneers place Gerald McCoy on season-ending IR

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is headed to the injured reserve after hyperextending his right knee in Sunday's loss to the Carolina Panthers.

The good news, according to head coach Lovie Smith, is that McCoy will not require surgery.

Smith told reporters after the game that McCoy injured the same knee a week earlier against the Detroit Lions, but the injuries are unrelated.

McCoy finishes the season with 35 tackles and a team-leading 8.5 sacks.
