Report: Rex Ryan went back to Geno Smith to avoid conflict with superiors

Despite his claim that everyone was on board with the decision to bench Michael Vick in favor of Geno Smith, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan would reportedly prefer to stick with the veteran quarterback.

Ryan went back to Smith as his starter in an effort to avoid conflict with owner Woody Johnson and general manager John Idzik during what could be his final few weeks, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Ryan and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg are among the majority of people in the organization who prefer Vick over Smith, but the head coach wants to take the high road out, Mehta reports.

Where that road leads to remains to be seen, but Ryan's tenure with the Jets appears to be nearing an end
